It is a conundrum. Even before the Shard is completed this summer, the amount of vacant grade A office space across central London is dwindling fast. Yet Shard London Bridge (its official title) does not have a single tenant signed up for the 575,000 sq ft of offices it has on offer. ...
... Matthew Purser, director of specialist occupational consultancy Studley, says: "Firstly, tower buildings simply don't suit a lot of existing requirements. The main problem is that they don't offer the quantum of floorspace these occupiers require, although many employees prefer towers because they come with a level of infrastructure that smaller buildings don't have. Secondly, they are often still reluctant to go for something they can't see and touch." This is particularly relevant, because four out of five towers are still under construction. ...
