McDermott Will & Emery Moving to Building Near U.S. Capitol

McDermott Will & Emery has decided to leave its downtown home a few blocks from the White House and signed a letter of intent to relocate in November 2012 to a renovated, glass-covered structure in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol dome.

The Chicago-origin firm, which employs 220 attorneys and 190 staff in the District, will be the primary tenant in what will be known as the McDermott Building, initially leasing 165,000 of the 235,000 square feet in the structure, with the option to take on more.  ...

... Studley's vice chairman, Lois Zambo, who represented the law firm in the deal along with Executive Managing Director Steven A. London, said the idea is that pedestrians will leave Union Station and see a distinctive "shining diamond" that will become McDermott's visual brand going forward.

McDermott approached Studley last year to begin searching for a new location as the firm's 15-year lease at 600 13th St. NW drew to an end. The North Capitol Street property first came onto the firm's radar several months ago. The firm did some due diligence -- including looking at crime statistics, analyzing commute times and assessing the availability of restaurants and hotels -- and decided the move would allow it to "grow nicely and aggressively" over the next decade, Burchfield said. ...
