Mitchell joined Studley (now Savills Studley) in 1988 after beginning his commercial real estate career at Huberth & Peters in New York. In 1984, he was honored with the industry’s coveted “Most Ingenious Deal of the Year” for his creation of Manhattan’s “Footwear Center” at 1414 Avenue of the Americas.
Since 1989, Mitchell has ranked as the firm’s top producing broker nationwide. Mitchell is the chairman of Savills Studley’s Board of Directors and its Executive Committee. His extensive experience representing Fortune 500 companies, major law firms, financial institutions and not-for-profits has placed him at the forefront of tenant advisory nationwide. The creation of “city strategic plans” is a specialty of Mitchell’s, including work for Time Warner’s 5 million sf NY portfolio (in 1996-2004 and 2010-2014), Ralph Lauren’s 2 million sf tri-state portfolio, Tiffany & Co.’s 1.5 million sf tri-state portfolio, and Accenture’s 3 million sf national portfolio. He is considered by his peers to be one of the top real estate advisors in the country.
Among Mitchell’s more significant transactional accomplishments are: in 2015 , Time, Inc.’s 700,000 square foot early lease termination at 1271 Avenue of the Americas and Kirkland & Ellis’ 400,000 square foot renewal and expansion at 601 Lexington Avenue; in 2014, Time Warner’s build-to-suit at Hudson Yards for 1.5M square feet, Time Inc.’s 700,000 square feet relocation to 225 Liberty Street and a 400,000 square foot lease restructure for John Wiley & Sons’ in Hoboken, NJ; in 2013, Jones Day’s 330,000 square foot relocation to 250 Vesey Street; in 2012, Washington, DC’s largest private sector lease of 420,000 square feet for Covington & Burling; in 2011, the 400,000 square feet lease restructure and extension for Crédit Agricole at 1301 Avenue of the Americas; in 2010, Tiffany & Co.’s landmark headquarters relocation to 405,000 square feet at 200 Fifth Avenue; Winston & Strawn’s renewal for 280,000 square feet at 200 Park Avenue; in 2009, Mitchell represented two of the largest transactions completed in the city: Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz’s 300,000 square foot renewal at 51 West 52nd Street, and Ralph Lauren’s 230,000 square foot headquarters renewal at 650 Madison Avenue; in 2007, he represented Time, Inc. in a 500,000 square foot sublease which involved a complex three party agreement with the parties and the landlord, The Rockefeller Group, at 1271 Avenue of the Americas; in 2004, Lower Manhattan’s largest transaction since the tragic events of 9/11, the 525,000-square-foot relocation of Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP to One World Financial Center; in 2001, Jones Day’s build-to-suit for more than 350,000 square feet on East 41st Street; Midtown New York’s largest transaction in 2000, a 1.1-million-square-foot build-to-suit world headquarters for Time Warner at Columbus Circle; and Manhattan’s largest lease transaction ever, completed in 1999, a 1,750,000-square-foot restructure and extension of Time Inc.’s corporate headquarters lease at 1271 Avenue of the Americas. In early 1999, the firm presented Mitchell with a newly created accolade, its Millennium Award, in recognition of Mitchell’s dedication to excellence in tenant advisory services.
