Real estate firm's American Heart Walk good for the soul

Blake Real Estate Inc. employees raised $100,000 during the recent American Heart Walk, a 3-mile fundraiser held on the National Mall. The real estate company raised matching funds from the Bender Family Foundation, formed by Blake Real Estate founders. David Bender, Blake president, is the third-generation Bender family member to lead the D.C. company. Executive Vice President Stephen Lustgarten topped the company’s list of fundraisers, snagging $34,000 this year.

More than 200 Turner Construction Co. employees, family members, friends and partners spent a weekend in December assisting 12 local charities. They performed tasks that ranged from repairing a fence for a charter school to hosting a holiday puppet show for a local elementary school.

About 20 Studley Inc. volunteers began tutoring first-graders in reading at two local elementary schools through Tutormate, an Innovations for Learning program, and working remotely with students over the phone and computer.

Washington Redskins Linebacker Ryan Kerrigan drafted nine of his teammates into serving as celebrity waiters for nearly 170 guests at Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Arlington on Dec. 2 in an effort that raised $108,000 for Kerrigan’s Blitz for the Better Foundation. The foundation helps families with special needs and critically ill children. Teammates London Fletcher, Adam Gettis, Darryl Tapp, Kirk Cousins,Kedrick Golston, Alfred Morris, Will Montgomery, Logan Paulsen and Doug Worthingtonhelped in the fundraiser.

The Washington Capitals raised $39,521 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s National Capital Area Chapter during the team’s Hockey Fights Cancer Night on Oct. 19.

Bonefish Grill partnered with The Arc of Greater Prince William on Nov. 9 as part of its grand opening festivities for a charity night to benefit the organization.

Giant Food LLC of Landover launched its 26th annual Good Neighbor Food and Funds Drive Nov. 1 to help stock the shelves of five Washington region food banks this holiday season. Giant set a goal to raise $300,000 for its food bank partners.

Pepco partnered with the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department to provide new smoke alarms free of charge to county residents.

Applebee’s restaurants marked the start of its national partnership with The Mission Continues, a national veterans service organization, by joining military veterans for a service project in the District on Oct. 26.Lawyers and staff from the D.C. office of law firm K&L Gates LLP participated in the inaugural firmwide Global Day of Service on Nov. 12.
